Intergenerational activities

What concerns intergenerational activities in our society, is that these kind of activities do not have a chance to succeed. And that is because in our society, there is a huge hole between elders. The younger part of society is not interested at all in the older part of society. And that is no surprise, because in our society hanging out with old people is a shame. I don't know why this stereotype got into everybodies mind, but this is the truth. Moreover, I think it is true, that youth and ahe will never agree. To my opinion, young people want to stay young, and thinking about growing up makes them sick. One of the reason why young will never agree wit the old, is that old people reminds the liabilities and blank routine of old people. According to me, the best way to communicate for generations that have a huge age difference is to launch special programs, where young volunteers would go to help or hang out with old people with their own volition. Because trying to do something against your own will, will always result in a failure.

Recipe for successful relationship

Many people are wondering, what is the recipe for successful relationship. Well, there is no step by step tutorial how to be succesfful with your boyfriend or girlfriend. But to my mind, these are the most important things in a relationship:

1. Get to know each other well. If one of the sides in a relationship do not know the other side, this can be, and will be a big problem.

2. Talk. Yes, quite simply, talk. If you have any problems concerning both or one of you be sure to sort them out. This way, you will get to know each other better and will be sure, that if a problem arises, you will always have someone beside you to help you.

3. Simplicity is the key. To have a good time, you don't need to spend money on cinemas, funfairs etc. All you need to do is go for a walk on a lovely saturday afternoon, do a picknick or just sit down for a cup of tea.

4. Don't be afraid to be physical. Hug each other frequently. Hold hands while walking in public, or if both of you are alone at home. Physical contact is as important as mental contact. Without it, you'll be afraid of your boyfriend/girlfriend, because you won't know him physicly.

5. Do surprises. Buy a gift with no particular reason. Don't waste money on precious jewelery, buy something which will be something of your heart, not of your wallet.

 6. Do varyous activities together. Go to the shop, take the first puzzle you see, bring it back home and assemble it together with your lovemate. Doing things together will certainly boost each other's trust and who knows, maybe both of you will find out, that you have a common hobby!

7. If you love someone, don't be affraid to show it. If your lovemate looks gorgeous, say it! There should be no hesitation in communication. If you feel, that you love your friend more than anything in the world, go ahead and say it! Allthough not too many times, because the word "love" is the kind of word that should be spoken, when you really mean it.

Well, I guess this is it. If you will have in mind these simple rules, so tu put it, your relationship should be long-lastind and unforgettable.

Day in university

These two days (monday, tuesday) were a real breeze in the university. Monday was real easy, I had only two lectures, even though I had to skip grammar, because I had some personal problems and I had to skip the test my groupmates were writing. I liked DAK because I have learnt a very funny saying: "And Bob's your uncle!". That totaly made my day. And today me and Stasys accounted dialogue reading during Phonetics, which everyone liked a lot. Stasys wrote the dialogue and it was hilarious, there were varyous thought that could have been read between the lines. The funny thing is that nobody understood it apart from our Phonetics teacher. She was the first to point out these thoughts that were between the lines. Which was even more funny. All in all, tomorrow will be nerve wracking. A grammar test and DAK presentation awaits me. Hope it will go smoothly. I guess that's it for today.

Friendship

According to the dictionary, friendship is a form of interpersonal relationship generally considered to be closer than association, although there is a range of degrees of intimacy in both friendships and associations. But that is a very formal expression of what is friendship. The best descriptions of friendship are written by famous writers. And in those descriptions they can trigger varyous feelings for the reader.
Firstly, my favourite quote is written by Menander which says: "If you never tell your secrets to your friend, you will never fear him when he becomes your enemy." This reminds me of a famous saying:"Keep your friends close but enemies closer". This saying has a lot of truth in it, because people can manipulate others when they know their weak spot. And none other than a secret is the most vulnerable place of a human. If said to another person, secret creates a certain button to push, which can help manipulate the teller of the secret.
Secondly, other famous saying by Zeno says that "A friend is another I". Which may be true, may be false for some people, it's a matter of interpretation. When you have a friend which shares your hobbies, interests, the same mentality and point of view he is truelly an another YOU. When a certain problem occurs, this kind of friend is first to got and talk to. The reason for that is, that he will certainly understand you and will certainly help you, because he will understand the situation the same way as you do.
Finally, all the sayings are true, but this particular one, which was written by Lord Chesterfield, which says:"Most people enjoy the inferiority of their best friends" I found a liittle bit contradictional. The first reason for that is, if someone thinks that his best friend is more inferior than him, that person can't be his best friend. It's more like a duke's and servant's relationship: again, as said in the first paragraph, this inferiority creates a loophole on this friend, which gives an opportunity to make use of him, and best friends certainly don't do that. Moreover, if someone is more inferior than you, you must ignore it and try to help your friend overcome this problem.
To sum evertything up, friendship is a very abstract word. It can be used in all kinds of contexts but at the end it still turns out that relationship is a certainain bond between two objects, most likely people. And this bond can't become a bridge which helps you to manipulate other person. It has to be a bridge wich leads to happiness.

Peace.

Improve writing ? Peace of cake !

There are lots of ways how to improve your writing quality, but what are the most common and most effective ? Basicly, the most effective ones are the most simple ones. I found a pretty informative article about improving your writing skills and I'm going to give you a quick summary of this article: 10 Simple steps how to improve your writing

1. READ. R-E-A-D. Simple as that. Articles, books, reviews, posters, newspapers. READ. This way is the most effective because if you have a strong visual memory, it registers all of it-the sentence structures, lots of new words and ways to express a certain thought in different ways.

2. Watch how the pros do it. There is nothing more informative than listening to a native speaker from England. It is the most raw and best footage of sentence structures, vocabulary etc.

3. Write what you think. The most stupid way of writing something is thinking in your native language and then translating it into English. NEVER DO IT ! Think in English, write in English. Because when translating, most of the idiomms, structures and other parts of your native language are not used in English.

4. Practice makes it perfect. The best way to improve your writing is to...write. Exactly ! You wont learn how to drive a car without actually driving it. This is why a lot of practice will make your writings top notch.

5. Trust yourself. Don't be affraid to be wrong. Everyone is wrong. Especeally the politicians. Well, no matter. Don't be nervous if you don't know a way to express one of your best thoughts. Try to do it in your own way !

6. Check please. After you have finished writing your perfect essay/poem/story or something with letters and sentences be sure to check for mistakes and write them down somewhere. That way you will know what mistakes you are doing often and if you correct it after every writing, that mistake is going to dissappear.

7. Send it to your friend from Manchester ! If you have english-speaking friends, send your works for them to check for mistakes. The natives surely know how something has to be written.

8. Theory. Yes, it is boring. But you have to learn the theorical part of writing. You wont do well in writing if you can't make a proper sentence with subject, predicate and an object. If you don't know what those three words mean, I have some bad news for you.

9. Mission impossible. Mind your commas ! If you want to be a succesfful writer, be sure you are aware of were commas should be in your sentences. Even the pro bloggers do these mistakes so don't be nervous if you skipped a comma or two in your writing.

10. Ready. Steady. Relax. Don't be nervous when writing, because your flow of mind will be blocked. Try to relax before writing. If you are writing a long text, do 10 minute brakes from it. TIME MANAGEMENT, CHILDREN, TIME MANAGEMENT !

Phonetics and Neil Armstrong

I recon you have already watched the video above. Have you heard the "a" sound between the words "for" and "man" ? Is it "For a man" or "for man" ? We were transcribing some sentences during the lesson and the whole group found themselves wondering whether they heard the sound "a" in the recording or they did not. Our phonetics teacher told us a story, that the famous astronaut Nale Armstrong was believed to have skiped the sound "a" while saying his first words on the moon. This is why I find phonetic lessons real fun and these stories about history and about little things you havent heard in well-known historical events are really amazing. In the video above the sound "a" is not clearly heard. But it's not a surprise because audio technologies 42 years ago havent had the quality like they have nowadays. The recording where the famous words "That's one small step for a man, one giant leap for mankind." were sent to audio laboratories for research and after a lot of arguments it was obvious that Neil havent skipped the sound "a". This story made me think about my phonetic mistakes. Nobody will care if I havent heard a sound in the recording while I'm transcribing sentences. So, basicly this story made me very cautious while transcribing.

Why evil and why potato with E ?

So first of all, I guess nobody is going to read my blog except for the person who told me to create this blog. But if you got here by mistake-hello anyways ! You only need to know two things about me: I am from Lithuania and I study english philology at a university. I hope that this educational blogging will be a lot of fun.

Secondly, why my blog is called evil potatoe and why potatoe is spelled with E ? The thing is, that I do a lot of grammatical mistakes in my writings and I hope this blog will help me eliminate these mistakes. Which kind of reminds me a not widely known (at least in Europe) story about Dan Quayle.

Six years out of office with two failed presidential bids now behind him, ex Vice President Quayle still ranks as America’s favorite dumb politician because of what happened in Trenton on June 15, 1992.That’s the day, you probably recall, a Trenton sixth grader had to teach the Vice President of the United States that potato is not spelled with an e on the end.

It may look stupid, but I really find myself in this kind of situation, when I think I know how to spell a certain word, and I am sure about it, but at the end the outcome is the same-the word is spelled in the wrong way. I don't know whether you have understood something, but if not, as my writing improves, I'll try to explain this to you with better grammatical structures, richer vocabulary and so on.

So, here goes.
